Every year a team of artists travel to schools in remote areas of Western Australia.
I joined artist Claire Pendrigh on a week long artists residency at Djidi Djidi Aboriginal School in Bunbury, Western Australia. We brought a hands on approach to the residency, teaching every year group how to felt, a wonderfully tactile experience that involves rubbing wool with hot soapy water to bond the fibers together. The students loved it.
In the months beforehand, we developed soft sensors made from wool and conductive thread. We embedded these sensors into the blanket felted by the students, using them to trigger an eclectic mixture of sounds recorded by the students.
The most valuable part? Seeing the huge smiles on the students faces as they created art.
